WHERE TO STAY

Longfellow's Wayside Inn, 72 Wayside Inn Road, Sudbury, Mass.; (800) 339-1776, www.wayside.org. America's oldest operating inn is about a 10-minute drive northwest of the garden. It has beautiful grounds, a restaurant featuring traditional England fare (think lobster pie and Indian pudding) and 10 charming guest rooms; doubles, $125 to $175, including breakfast; dinner entrees, $20 to $33.

Lotus Blossom, 394 Boston Post Road (Route 20), Sudbury, (978) 443-0200, is a stylish, contemporary Asian fusion bistro; dinners about $25 per person.

Georgio's Pizza & Restaurant, 1645 Concord St., Framingham, (508) 788-1611, is a classic New England sub and pizza spot; about $10 per person.

Mad Willies, 963 Worcester Road (Route 9), Framingham, (508) 370-3833, is a terrific soft-serve ice cream shop where you can mix such flavors as oatmeal cookie and malted milk ball.
