Australia golf - Barnbougle Dunes — Australia Golf & Tasmania

Tasmania? Barnbougle Dunes?

You may wonder: 1) Where the heck is Tasmania? and 2) Are there golf courses there?

Normally, I'd wonder with you, as my knowledge of Tasmania began with the ravenous Devil of Bugs Bunny lore.

Tasmania, it turns out, is an island off Australia, which I learned from editors of Golf Odyssey, who promptly traversed the globe to evaluate Barnbougle Dunes, the lauded Tom Doak golf course.

The skinny? It's worth the trek to this Top-35-in-the-world course, no matter how many hours of cranky fliers you have to endure.

Barnbougle Dunes is on Anderson Bay, and, aside from a modest clubhouse and some unpretentious cottages, there's nothing here but wind, heaving dunes, and tall native grasses.

The fairways and greens blend well with the sand hills, and Barnbougle Dunes looks likes it's been there forever. A flock of birdlife and, sometimes, a wallaby complete the picture.

The editors of Golf Odyssey said, "Seldom have we encountered a course where so many holes are instantly memorable and offer so many strategic options. From start to finish, the links' variety, vistas, and shot options thrill us. Barnbougle Dunes is a piece of golfing heaven."

It is remote, but Barbougle Dunes is an absolute must for your Australia golf vacation. Royal Melbourne is just across the Bass Strait.

November through March (summertime Down Under) is the best time to visit, and try to avoid June through September, when wind, rain, and cold present uncomfortable conditions. That can be great fun, too, though.

The Insider’s Guide to Sophisticated Golf Travel

Golf Odyssey has been published for 16 years, but most people have never heard of us. We’ve circled the globe, visiting thousands of golf courses, resorts and restaurants, but most people have never seen us. The reason is that Golf Odyssey — the world’s preeminent source of golf travel intelligence — is not written for “most people.” If you’re someone who wants unbiased advice about the best places to play and stay, and whose golf vacations are too important to leave to chance, Golf Odyssey is written for you.

As a result, our approach is unique. We travel anonymously and do not accept any advertising, discounts or “freebies” from the
properties we review, which gives us the independence to “tell it like it is,” good or bad. Plus, we share insider secrets that golf courses and resorts don’t necessarily want you to know, such as the best rooms you can reserve at standard prices; “locals’ secret” restaurants; even how to gain access to otherwise private courses.
